What is incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional leakage of urine that can occur at any time during the day or night. It can affect people of all ages and genders, with various types including stress, urge, mixed, functional incontinence, and urinary frequency.

The condition often stems from weakened or improperly functioning pelvic-floor muscles, and it can be caused by pregnancy, childbirth, trauma, surgery, or other factors such as a sedentary lifestyle or anxiety.

How is incontinence diagnosed?

Incontinence is diagnosed through a thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider or physical therapist. They will assess your symptoms, daily experiences, and the condition of your pelvic-floor muscles, hips, and low back. Diagnostic tests such as urodynamic testing, ultrasound, or MRI may also be used to confirm the root causes and severity of the condition.
