What is frailty?

Frailty, or general weakness, is a syndrome where the body becomes unable to handle daily stress, leading to reduced strength, endurance, and overall function. This can make it difficult to perform essential activities like bathing, dressing, preparing meals, or participating in social events.

It can be caused by conditions such as disease, persistent pain, trauma, or prolonged physical inactivity, and is common in individuals with multiple chronic health issues.

How is frailty diagnosed?

Frailty can be diagnosed by a physical therapist or physician through a thorough examination of your strength, mobility, balance, and lung capacity. A physical therapist will also assess your risk of falls, flexibility, and posture, and will ask detailed questions about your symptoms and daily functioning to identify signs of frailty, such as severe fatigue, weakness, and difficulty performing routine activities.
