What is a fracture or bone injury?

A fracture, or broken bone, occurs when there is a break in the bone’s structure due to high-impact trauma, falls, or other stressors. Fractures can range from hairline cracks to complete breaks that disrupt the bone entirely, affecting the bone’s stability and causing pain, swelling, or limited movement. Bone injuries may include fractures or other injuries like bruises to the bone or minor cracks, all of which can limit mobility and lead to a long recovery process if not treated properly.

How is a fracture or bone pain diagnosed?

Diagnosing fractures and bone injuries typically involves an assessment of symptoms, such as pain, tenderness, swelling, or deformity, along with imaging techniques. X-rays are the most common tool for visualizing bone breaks, while CT scans or MRIs may be used for more complex injuries or fractures that are difficult to see. A healthcare provider will also examine the injured area and may order additional tests to check for damage to surrounding muscles, tendons, or ligaments.

Can physical therapy help?

Physical therapy is essential for a safe and effective recovery following a fracture or bone injury, as it helps restore strength, flexibility, and movement in the affected area. A Rehab Associates therapist will develop a personalized plan that includes exercises to improve joint mobility, strengthen supporting muscles, and gradually return you to your normal activities. This customized approach helps reduce stiffness and prevent further injury, supporting you in regaining confidence and resilience after your bone injury.
