What are falls?

A fall is an unexpected event that results in unplanned contact with a surface, such as the floor or furniture, without being pushed or having a medical event like fainting or a heart attack. A near-fall occurs when someone stumbles or loses balance but catches themselves before hitting the ground. Several factors, including age, overall health, leg weakness, balance difficulties, and environmental hazards, can increase the risk of falling, especially among older adults.

How are falls diagnosed?

There is no single test to predict a fall, but adults aged 65 years or older should be screened yearly by their primary care provider for fall risk. A physical therapist can also evaluate individuals who have concerns about falling, recent loss of balance, or a history of falls. The evaluation includes reviewing medical history and medications, assessing vision, heart rate, and blood pressure, performing balance and strength tests, and assessing the home environment for safety hazards.

Can physical therapy help?

Physical therapists can create a personalized treatment plan to reduce fall risk through balance training, strength exercises, and endurance programs. Treatment often includes practicing walking, dual-task training (such as walking while talking), and pain management. Additionally, therapists provide education on preventing falls, overcoming fear of falling, and making the home environment safer.
